Shared decision making means that patients are supported to make decisions that are right for them.
The clinicians have the expertise and experience in health and health care, whilst the patient knows about themselves and what is important to them in their health and life. Together the patient and Clinician discuss what they both know and then come to a decision together. This is called 'Shared Decision Making'.
In order for you to be involved in decisions about your care there are three key things you need to know;
- What are my options?
- What are the possible risks, benefits and consequences of each option?
- How can we make a decision together that is right for me?

Patient Decision Aids (PDAs) can also help patients. NICE have produced a range of PDAs that are available.
